2000 U.S. Chess Championships
A Celebration of the Mind

The Seattle Chess Foundation is organizing the 2000 U.S. Chess Championships.

The championships will take place from September 25 - October 6, 2000 at the
Town Hall                                       Seattle, Washington 98101            

Twelve of the best United States chess players will compete in eleven rounds for the the US Chess Championship. Ten of the best United States female chess players will fight in 9 rounds for the title U.S. Women's Championship title. The Westin Hotel Seattle is the official accommodation sponsor and United Airlines is the official airline carrier for these championships.

Admission to watch the games and commentaries by IM Jeremy Silman is free.

Lecture Schedule

IM Jeremy Silman will provide commentaries during game days free of charge. His lectures will begin half an hour after the start of the round.
Silman's lecture site will be at Town Hall with the exception of the following days when his lecture are at the Speakeasy Cafe:

Time Control

Time control: 40 moves in 100 minutes followed by 20 moves in 50 minutes followed by all moves in 10 minutes (all moves played get 30 seconds bonus (Fischer method)

Side events during the US Chess Championships include
- scholastic event on September 30
- 500 children charity simul on October 7

Town Hall is a renovated church dating from 1916 which has been turned into a new community cultural center, hosting events as varied as performances, concerts, gala balls and now the prestigious national championships.

While the Great Hall of the building can seat up to 900 spectators, there will also be a lecture hall where International chess Master (IM) Jeremy Silman will provide expert daily commentary about the games to the public. Entry to watch (first-come first-serve) the games are free and participation in the lectures is encouraged.  Do you have the insights to spot the mistakes and brilliancies seen and hidden by the great grandmasters?  Come and find out!

Town Hall is located at 8th and Seneca, one block east of the I-5 Freeway, just across from downtown. It lies just south of Freeway Park, where First Hill meets downtown.

From the north, take the Union St. exit from I-5; continue west to 5th Avenue; turn south (left) on 5th and proceed to Spring; turn east (left) and go up the hill over the freeway.  Entry to an adjacent commercial parking lot is from 7th,  Spring or Seneca streets.   Entrance to Town Hall is at 8th and Seneca.

From the south, take the Madison St. exit from I-5, continue straight ahead through Madison and you come to 7th and Spring, entrance to parking lot.

Metro Bus #2 stops right at Town Hall.
